“I didn’t Want That For My Children”

A recent conversation with a music loving mum expresses her importance on having music in their life; “i’d be lost if I couldn’t play guitar” “and I didn’t want want that for my children”

Music has brought me a huge amount of pleasure and I would like my children to have the opportunity which may bring them pleasure too. I believe it’s good for brain development although I believe the evidence for this is not robust.

I think it’s a very good life lesson to develop their discipline to work at something and stick with it when it becomes hard. Playing guitar has huge social benefits and as they get older I hope it will keep them busy and away from potential negative influences.

The hardest thing so far is enforcing and supervising practice but this is getting easier as they get older. We did have trouble finding a decent guitar teacher for them but his teacher is excellent and developing solid technique whilst getting a lot of enjoyment from their playing. They’ve also played in a band which has improved their confidence no end.

My expectations from lessons are that my children will be taught good technique challenged to an appropriate level whilst playing music they enjoy and find rewarding.
